February 23, 1942 – October 21, 2026
Gil de Guzman Andaya, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on October 21, 2026, at the age of 84.
Born in the Philippines, Gil was the son of Epifania de Guzman Andaya and Egidio C. Andaya and the eldest of their eight children. Gil earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Mapúa Institute of Technology and worked as an engineer for Verizon until his retirement.
One of the greatest joys of Gil’s life was his beloved wife, Esther Chanliongco Andaya, who passed away on September 28, 2026. The two grew up as neighbors in the Philippines and met as teenagers. Esther was truly the girl next door. Their young love blossomed into a lifelong partnership, and when Esther came to the United States around 1970, Gil followed, beginning their life together in America. Together, they traveled the world, sharing countless adventures and a remarkable love story that spanned a lifetime. Gil never lost his affection for Esther. Even during hospital stays, he delighted in telling the nurses that he was Esther’s “boyfriend.” After a lifetime spent by her side, Gil followed Esther in death just 23 days later, a poignant final chapter in a love story that began when they were teenagers and endured throughout their lives.
Gil found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed cooking, especially pork barbecue sticks and kare-kare, his daughter Leslie’s favorite. He loved to dance, enjoyed bowling, and was an avid reader. Above all, Gil treasured his family. He was a loving and proud father to Glenn and Leslie and an adoring grandfather to Luke, Grace, Jada, and Jaylen, who brought him immense joy and pride. Gil is survived by his children, Glenn Andaya and Leslie DeTorres; his grandchildren, Luke and Grace Andaya, children of Glenn and Lizle Andaya, and Jada and Jaylen DeTorres, children of Leslie and Marlon DeTorres; his sisters, Perla Ferrer, Julie Gamboa, and Aurora Quiballo; his brothers, Ferdinand Andaya, Edwin Andaya, and Manuel Andaya; and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Esther, and his sister, Estrellita Leyba. Gil’s legacy lives on through the family he cherished and the enduring love he shared with Esther. Their remarkable love story and the family they built together will continue to inspire generations to come. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
