With profound sadness and immeasurable love, we announce the peaceful passing of Joan Marcell on August 3, 2026, at the age of 95. Joan was a devoted wife, beloved mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, accomplished educator, and dear friend to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, compassion, service, and unconditional love that will continue to inspire generations.

Joan is now reunited with the love of her life, her beloved husband, Richard Marcell, whose memory she carried in her heart every day. Their enduring love was the foundation of their family and a beautiful example of lifelong devotion.

She is lovingly survived by her daughters, Nancy Graham and her husband, Brian Graham, and her daughter, Kathy Marcell. Joan also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Melissa Buchman, John McGurty Jr., Eric McGurty, and Matthew McGurty and his wife, Chelsea McGurty. She was the proud and adoring great-grandmother of Dominic and Christian, who brought endless joy and light to her life.

Joan dedicated much of her life to education as a respected teacher in the Bergenfield Public School System, where she faithfully served her students for many years. Her passion for helping children learn and grow earned her the distinction of Teacher of the Year, a recognition that reflected not only her professional excellence but also the genuine love, patience, and encouragement she showed every child who entered her classroom. To Joan, teaching was never simply a profession—it was a calling.

Outside the classroom, Joan embraced life with enthusiasm and gratitude. She was a lifelong sports enthusiast, an adventurous traveler, a gifted gardener, and an unwavering animal lover. She had a heart as beautiful as the flowers she cherished and found happiness in life's simplest blessings. Whether tending her garden, admiring a blooming flower, or simply spending time outdoors, she found beauty everywhere and gently reminded those around her to do the same. Her love for animals reflected the compassion that defined her life, and her home and heart were always open to those in need.

Above all else, Joan treasured her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life, and she never missed an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments, offer words of encouragement, or simply make them smile. She created countless memories filled with laughter, warm hugs, unwavering support, and unconditional love that her family will cherish forever.

Those who knew Joan will remember her not only for her accomplishments but for the extraordinary way she made others feel seen, valued, and loved. She led with empathy, generosity, humility, and quiet strength. She always offered a helping hand, a listening ear, or words of encouragement when they were needed most. Even during life's challenges, she chose kindness, gratitude, and hope. She taught her family the importance of compassion, respect, responsibility, and finding joy in everyday moments—not only through her words, but through the example she lived every day.

Although our hearts are broken by her passing, we find comfort knowing her legacy lives on in the flowers that bloom, the animals she loved, the students she inspired, the family she adored, and the countless lives she touched through her generosity, grace, and joyful spirit. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. We will honor her memory by living with the same kindness, compassion, and appreciation for life that she so beautifully embodied.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Petrik Funeral Home, 140 Palisade Avenue, Bogota, NJ 07603.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Ascension Church, 256 Azalea Drive, New Milford, NJ 07646. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery at 11:45 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the ASPCA or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Joan's honor, reflecting her lifelong love of animals and her compassionate spirit.

May Joan rest in eternal peace, reunited with those who went before her, surrounded by everlasting beauty, with her love continuing to bloom forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
