Joan Van Valen Obituary

Joan Louise Van Valen, 92 (formerly Johannemann, nee Bressem) Born Jan 14, 1929 and sadly left us Feb 5, 2021. Joan was originally from East Rutherford, where her father was Captain of the Fire Department.  She graduated from East Rutherford HS in 1946 and worked as a secretary at Becton Dickinson.  Joan was a singer in the Sweet Adelines barbershop quartet and later in the St. Francis de Sales Church choir in Lodi for many years.  She has been a resident of Bogota since 1968.  She loved her family, the shore, flowers and gardens, spring and fall, old movies and music, and long conversations reminiscing with family and friends.  Joan is predeceased by her mother Mabel Gittelbauer, her father Otto Bressem, her sister Mabel Pinto, and her husband Lee VanValen.  She is survived by her four children, Christine Johannemann of Lodi, Scott Johannemann of Henderson NV, William Johannemann (and wife Barbara) of Lodi, and Andrew VanValen of Bogota, her grandson Robert Johannemann (and wife Zoe) of Edgewater, and three great grandsons Timothy, Joshua and Daniel.  Services will be private for immediate family.  Joan also loved animals and requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made in memoriam to the Bergen County Animal Shelter, 100 United Lane, Teterboro, NJ 07608.
